How Do I Know if My Concrete Slab is Sinking?
As a home or business owner, chances are you have multiple concrete slab surfaces around (or even under) your property. This can include driveways, walkways, patios, and more. There are times when the evidence of sinking concrete is easily spotted, but at a glance, you may ask, “How do I know if my concrete slab is sinking?” Sometimes, it is not as obvious. What are the signs you should be looking for? Here are the signs that you have a sinking slab.
Sinking Slab Signs to Look For
There are several signs and circumstances that will help you determine if your concrete is sinking or settling:
Let’s start with the obvious: Visible raised or depressed concrete and concrete cracks. Seeing visible evidence that your slab is raising or lowered from its original level position is an obvious indicator you have a sinking slab.
The danger zone: Trip and fall occurrences. If you have tripped (and we hope you did not fall!) over any area of your slab, even if it is a small area that caused it, you could have a problem starting. When you find yourself in this “danger zone,” it is always good to get an inspection.
No gap is a good gap! Visible gaps and/or voids under your slab. When it comes to the possibility of sinking concrete, no gap is good. Gaps lead to sinking and settling; it is better to address them sooner rather than later with a professional.
Check the fixed structures around your concrete slabs: Signs of settlement compared to fixed structures. If you compare your slab to the areas of your property around it, such as walls or railings, you may be able to see that the concrete is sinking more easily.
How does the concrete feel under your feet? A feeling of sloping when walking on your concrete. If you notice the feeling of sloping under your feet as you traverse your driveway or walkway, then you may have sinking occurring.
